Apologist = One who practices Apologetics (for Apologetics see official definition below)
Around 1250 there was a deep thinker named Thomas (Saint Thomas Aquinas) who thought that God was the most real thing that existed. Picture a rug with God at the center and the sides are all of reality. Each aspect of reality was connected to God: astronomy shows us a huge universe helping us better understand God as infinite. Physics reveals the level of fine tuning that God used in creating this orderly universe with. Logic, philosophy, biology, geology, the law, anthropology, and many other sciences each somehow connected to God. For years this is how we saw God’s creation. But hundreds of years ago came a far different idea: that miracles are impossible and therefore God can’t do miracles. So every effort was made to tear God out of the tapestry of reality. What was left was reality on one side and God another. Some said “Having faith is believing in something you just know ain't true.” ― Mark Twain, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. So we have gone from seeing belief in God as a small reasonable step from what we know to be true, to today where belief in God is seen as a “leap of faith”.Apologetics is the study of the many ways in which reality actually points us toward the reality of God and the Christian story. We are re-attaching God to the tapestry of Reality.

(Official definition: “…always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you;…”1 Peter 3:15b ESV https://bible.com/bible/59/1pe.3.15.ESV The English word defense is from the Greek word Apologia. From that word we get the term apologetics. To be clear Apologetics has nothing to do with apologizing.
